Reel Shorts Sneak Preview (14A, Coarse Language)

Location: Second Street Theatre
Time: 1:30 – 2:45pm
This entertaining package of award-winning short films includes a festival favourite Peace Region film from the 2011 Reel Shorts Film Festival (filmmaker in attendance) and advance screenings of 3 arts-related films that will be screening at the 6th Reel Shorts Film Festival May 2-6, 2012. While two of the films are family-friendly, there is one (Not Your Time) that has coarse language and another (The Interview) that includes images of a post-apocalyptic world that may be considered unsuitable for young children. The films are:

  • The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore (USA, 2010, 16 minutes) – an award-winning gorgeously animated allegory about the transformative power of story as it relates to a man who builds his whole life around his love of books
  • Not Your Time (USA, 2010, 25 minutes) – an award-winning musical comedy starring Jason Alexander (George from Seinfeld) about a long-suffering screenwriter who makes a round of calls to the Hollywood elite with drastic results
  • The Driving Accident (Rolla, BC, 2010, 5 minutes) – an award-winning festival favourite from the 2011 Reel Shorts Film Festival, this Peace Region gem about a young boy who must use his wits and creativity to recover from a minor tragedy has gone on to great success on the festival circuit including winning the Best Family Film at the 15 Minutes of Fame Film Festival in Florida and selection at the 28th Chicago International Children’s Film Festival Oct which is widely recognized as the major film festival for children in North America. Filmmaker Rio Fitch and the star of the film, his 5-year-old son Skyler, will participate in a short Q&A after the screening.
  • The Interview (USA, 2011, 12 minutes) – an award-winning comedy about a young man who sets out for an interview at a radio station in a post-apocalyptic world where he may be the second-to-last man on Earth trying to get a job from the last man on Earth

 

Wearable Art Show

Location: Centre for Creative Arts
Showings: 4:30pm & 7pm
Doors open ½ hour before show times, limited seating
This High Energy Performance features a Catwalk style showcase of unique wearable pieces created by local artists.

The Prairie Art Gallery is hosting a free mask making workshop where families and children can drop-in to design and make their own mask to wear and take home. Drop-in anytime between 1:00 – 5:00 pm and get creative with us!

Cultural Costume Party

Location: Teresa Sargent Hall, Montrose Cultural Centre
Time: 7:30 pm – 1:00 am, Free admission
Everyone is welcome to join the party! The Prairie Art Gallery is hosting a cocktail party to celebrate our unique blend of peoples and passions. Guests are welcome to wear traditional cultural attire or even dress up as their favorite super hero or movie character. Costume-free guests are welcome to join the party, but we invite you to express yourself and what you love by using your fashion!

  • i close my eyes and they disappear* (Edmonton 2010, 6:00, Super8, 16mm, HDSLR, Experimental. Dir: Kyle Armstrong) – An experimental depiction of the border zone between waking and dreaming.
  • Dragon.Love* (Calgary 2010, 2:34, Animation. Dir: Haleigh Toney) – A humourous new take on the story of the knight in shining armour who rescues a damsel in distress.
  • What Remains* (Calgary 2010, 4:20, Stop Motion Animation. Dir: Stefanie Wong) – Fiona discovers a strange room filled with objects from her past and must link them with the present before returning to the real world.
  • A Prairie Love (Edmonton 2011, 3:14, Animation. Dir: Michael Pedruski) – An elderly, hospitalized woman recalls her past in rural Alberta’s Kalyna country.
  • The Lifer (Calgary 2009, 8:00, HD Video, Live Action Comedy. Dir: Christopher Markowsky) – A postal worker must choose between a promotion and his dream of becoming the world’s best marine biologist ever.
  • The High Level Bridge (Edmonton 2010, 4:39, HD Video, Documentary Essay. Dir: Trevor Anderson) – The filmmaker drops his camera from Edmonton’s High Level Bridge in memory of those who have jumped from it.
  • Just Can’t Trust a Drunk Ninja* (
